You seem to be very involved with charity work, what can you tell us about your experiences so far?
Over the past few years I've done a few fundraisers and volunteering activities. Most recently before this year I went to India with Oxfam for a couple of weeks. After coming back and telling everyone at work about the amazing experience I had and how I wanted to do something similar again, a few of my colleagues told me they were interested in joining me if i went again.
I learnt about 'Habitat for Humanity' during a presentation they made at a Constructing Excellence Wales event and found an opportunity to take a group out for a couple of weeks to help on a building project in Malawi. To raise money for this trip we decided to hold a charity ball and auction. After a lot of begging we had a collection of really good auction items including a Wales rugby shirt, some paintngs from a local artist and the signed Ronaldo shirt donated by Morson. The Ronaldo shirt raised £270 and the evening in total raised £5,000.
Unfortunately I couldn't make the trip to Malawi because various co workers dropped out and I didn't have enough bodies to make a team. However, my sister's school (Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones in Amlwch on Anglesey) annually take a group of 6th formers to a village in Zambia (Itala) to teach English for a few weeks so I was able to help wih her fundraising by donating half of my funds to her project.
I then donated the other half of the funds raised to 'Hospice at Home'; chosen because cancer has affected my family as it has done most, and 'Hospice at Home' has made a difference to friends and family in the past. I am grateful for everyone involved and whilst I couldn't make the trip this time, it's comforting to know that a lot of good came out of the fundraiser and to know that I have the support of so many should I plan for any trips in the future.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
Whilst in India I played golf on the highest golf course in the world (part of the travelling I did after the work with Oxfam).
